If you, will that is.
You can play it the usual way, linear, beginning and end, then its over red rover.
Or, make a shift, begin to create time and space
(no planners, organising or decluttering of the house cleaning kind necessary)
and enjoy a whole lot more of living, and actual life.
how do we create time??
by getting off the train of busy doing achieving
Taking instead time to be present to what we are ‘actually’ experiencing
(hint: its not what you think)
even if only for a moment, an hour or few
our experience of time is measured by our thoughts
We experience this when we drive somewhere new - it takes a long time as we take in all the new information, new scenery, new landmarks, new sounds, we are more aware of our environment as it is unfamiliar to us, engaging us in increased levels of thinking.
When we drive home, we have some familiarity, albeit new, and the trip seems to take a fraction of the time…
After a while, we leave work and arrive at home and don’t even remember the drive. We usually say we are on auto pilot at these times, and yes, your brain has it covered and you don’t need to be present to the many moments that made up that journey.
It is likely that this has something to do with accidents being said to happen closer to home - we aren’t so engaged with our surroundings as they are more familiar, and that can have us miss something….
back to time, and making time….
Our usual time experience when we are busy, on the go, paying attention to unfamiliar surroundings or zoning out in familiar ones is linear - we start here we end there. Past-present-future.
Yoga starts at 6.30 and it ends at 8pm.
What happens in between??
When we are breathing or engaged in yoga in a way that is
curious
exploratory
slow
engaged with our body
nourishing yin (parasympathetic nervous system)
present to the sensations
present to the way we are practising
listening to the signals of our body
gently tending to what we are feeling
and experiencing as we practise
Something else happens.
We find ourselves in the liminal space. The space between. Effusive. Broad. Open.
Neither at the beginning or the end
Neither here nor there
we are invited to slip into the eternal now
a space-place were time dissolves, melts, blurs - spreads
and rather than being rushed-crushed linear contractive
we are so engaged in where and what
that it spans a gentle forever and no time
simultaneously
when we slow down
our experience can become one of spaciousness
beyond time
we could even be beyond place in some way
we create our own time,
this is a very real side effect of slowing down and deepening as I like to call the inner exploration.
this is the way we approach practise
in not-exactly-yoga
and radical embodied breathwork
beyond time
creating time and space
much of that thinking is busy work
all splash and no dash as my Mum used to say
but where does it getting you?
slow down and find out, be, where you are
the superfluous in mind, body, breath and life will begin to fall away
with increased presence
we can experience increased focus
(beyond the distractions of the mind - they are more mind games than anything else)
we decrease our stress levels
increase our health levels
deepen our impact
and find we come to know ourselves better
take clearer more impactful action
that we intend to take
creating, adding to a life experience that we love, and a world that is more inline with our deep dreams and yearnings
this is the beauty of a breath
of taking a moment or 20
instead of pushing through
or doing more.
Nat just came in from the food forest where she is lost in coconut palms, and asked me:
Why do you love teaching yoga??
It has been many a time I have said I am stopping, and then I don’t. I can’t.
I love my yoga time, whether I am practising or teaching/leading, it is all about this liminal space - deep time engaging with my being
and all of you that join in this space
deep space that is so rare in todays world, and yet so incredibly precious and essential - it is life and health giving!
It is quite simply a gift I love to share, one I believe the world needs.
If we all took more time for the things that really matter like love, laughter, depth, connection - for the sheer fucking joy of it!!
Ha what a radical transformation that will be! This is a world I am dreaming into being, how about you???
